Earlier this year, Jan Schakowsky, the U.S. representative from Illinois’s 9th congressional district, visited Stryker’s Sage business in Cary to learn about hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) and the clinical interventions and governmental involvement that can help reduce the risk of pneumonia for patients. Unfortunately, pneumonia is the most common type of hospital-acquired infection (HAI) and accounts for 25% of all HAIs.1 It’s especially dangerous because it has a mortality rate of 22% for all NV-HAP patients2 and can occur in every area of the hospital.
The congresswoman and her staff met with Paul Bean, Sage Vice President and General Manager, Chris Schmidt, Senior Director, Manufacturing, Nate Tipton, Senior Director, Government Affairs, and several marketing, human resources and clinical education associates. Following introductions, the congresswoman and her staff received a presentation about the company’s mission and impact on the local community as well as Stryker’s historical role in helping to address ther risk factors for hospital-acquired pneumonia through comprehensive oral care. Dr. Dian L. Baker, PhD, NP, RN, professor at the School of Nursing, California State University, also presented her published research and explained the need for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to take action to help reduce this patient safety issue. A productive dialog on the topic ensued. “It’s inspiring to see that our community leaders are interested and engaged on this issue. Hopefully, by working together we can make a greater impact,” stated Chip Bartel, Senior Manager, Downstream Marketing.
Representative Schakowsky then received a guided tour through the manufacturing facility. During the tour, she observed the processes and safety protocols in place to ensure the highest standards of product quality. The tour also highlighted the advanced technology and innovative techniques used in the manufacturing of the Stryker oral care products. Representative Schakowsky expressed her admiration for the company's dedication to patient safety and quality.
The visit concluded with an appreciation and commitment from all parties to work collaboratively towards reducing hospital-acquired pneumonia and enhancing patient care standards.

Proper oral hygiene can help address risk factors for pneumonia across the continuum of care
Learn moreHospital oral care plays a pivotal role in reducing the risk of HAP by minimizing the colonization of harmful bacteria in the respiratory tract.
Learn moreThe release of the updated SHEA/IDSA/APIC Strategies to Prevent HAP in 20221 has reminded healthcare providers that oral hygiene is an essential intervention but has sparked new discussions about comprehensive oral care. A systematic review and meta-analysis by Ehrenzeller and Klompas (2023)2 looked at the role of toothbrushing.
