Infectious pathogen transmission from blood or body fluid, contaminated medical instruments, and sharps in the healthcare environment are significant concerns when improper management and improper disposal of regulated medical waste occur. When regulated medical waste is not managed well, it places an increased risk for healthcare personnel, patients, and the community at large. This educational program will help healthcare professionals identify the different types of regulated medical waste. The components of regulated waste management will be described with emphasis placed on the financial and clinical issues related to improper waste management.
