This continuing education activity provides an overview of advanced photonics technology that improves intracavity illumination and visualization to overcome the challenges in minimally invasive, minimal access, and open surgical techniques. The limitations and problems associated with traditional OR lighting, including selected preventable errors and surgical “never events”, will be reviewed. Advanced photonics lighting technology and non-conductive instrumentation used for intracavity illumination and visualization,  including its advantages, safety aspects, and common applications, will also be described.
