Bracing for the COVID-19 pandemic surges that have swelled across the globe, hospitals grew concerned about the potential for a sudden flood of patients – and not enough beds on hand to meet the projected demand.
To help solve this challenge for our customers, we raced to develop a new low-cost, limited-release emergency response bed. Our Emergency Relief Bed (ERB) was designed to serve those on the front lines of the global pandemic – ranging from hospital emergency departments to triage and pop-up areas of care.
Within just seven days of concepting the idea, thousands of Emergency Relief Beds were assembled and ready to be delivered to some of the hardest-hit locations, including New York City.
In August, our Medical division announced the donation of more than 22,500 Emergency Relief Bed Kits to Project C.U.R.E., a nonprofit organization that delivers life-saving medical equipment and supplies to hospitals and clinics throughout the developing world.
Project C.U.R.E. will send the kits to areas outside of the U.S. where the beds are approved for use and COVID-19 outbreaks occur. The ERB Kits include a bed frame, mattress and IV pole. In addition to the kits, Stryker is also donating more than 6,000 additional mattresses, which can be used as replacements over time.
“Since 2010, Stryker and Project C.U.R.E. have been working together to make healthcare better for thousands of people in the developing world. We are pleased to see our Emergency Relief Beds getting into the hands of these front-line workers in areas where they are needed most,” said Brad Saar, president of Stryker’s Medical division.
“We are thrilled and honored to partner with the team at Stryker to provide much needed medical equipment to the front-line workers in the fight against COVID-19. These beds will make a critical difference to both patients and healthcare professionals, and Project C.U.R.E. is working hard to get them delivered around the world. We are grateful to be a part of this important effort,” said Douglas Jackson, PhD, JD, president and CEO of Project C.U.R.E.
The new ERB Kit is the latest addition to an array of kits available via Project C.U.R.E. to medical professionals engaging in humanitarian missions, which includes a Neuro Kit, an Orthopaedic Drill Kit, a Spine Kit, an ENT Kit, and more.
